One of the world's most challenging horse races
The Melbourne Cup is one of the world's most challenging horse races and is the richest race in Australia, and it is the highlight of the Spring Racing Carnival. The race is run over 3,200 metres and is a handicapped race, this means the better horse carries the most weight . The distance and the handicap ensure that the Melbourne Cup is a horse race in which the occasional punter really has no chance of picking the winner.

Friday Nights – Lightly raced Anabaa four-year-old from the Tim Martin stable and looks ready to produce the goods now after a very soft win in midweek company over the 1550m. Handled by Corey Brown, Friday Nights landed straight on the bunny and despite having a runner camped right outside him travelled sweetly and within himself throughout. Brown clicked him up rounding the turn and this strong gelding responded – kicking away for a smart win. A mile won’t pose any problems and looks the type that could get up to 2000m and really dominate at that level.
Northern Meteor – Had his first run for the Waterhouse camp and had the blinkers on first time when treating midweek rivals with absolute disdain over the 1250m. Sat outside the lead before accelerating 400m out and leaving rivals stranded. Put a gap in them very quickly before going right on with the job. You don’t see many more dominant wins at midweek meetings and the fact Gai is throwing him straight into the Brian Crowley Stakes (1200m) at Randwick on Saturday suggests he’s every bit as good as he looks.

Raise – Best run of the week and an absolute must for your blackbook. Restrained early when resuming over 1400m, she raced a little keenly before settling well back one off the fence. The pace was solid up front with Jeff Lloyd deciding to rev her up approaching the turn. Improved very quickly and when another runner shifted ground in front of her Lloyd was forced to the extreme outside – losing at least one length. Once balanced she motored into fourth position and clearly hit the line better than any other runner. Not a renowned first-up performer and better over further, it was a cracking return. Follow.
Rendzina – Bit of a smokey for the value punters in weeks to come. With only one win from 20 starts she is hardly the most bankable mare in the business but her two runs this time in have been good and she could have almost got away with a handy mares event on Saturday if luck had gone her way. Settling well back in the run the speed had been slow up front making it tough for the backmarkers and when Rendzina became held-up and forced back to the inside at the top of the straight her chances looked gone. Peter Wells got her going but at the 150m had to steady off heels and lost her momentum. Picked-up again very late and hit the line with plenty up the sleeve. Worth something next start.Melbourne by Brad Waters

Zizz – This Matthew Ellerton-trained colt probably had every chance in the opening event at Caulfield last Saturday but his effort was still terrific. The Hurricane Sky three-year-old had only had one career run before that run for a win in a Seymour maiden. At Caulfield, Zizz ran into a very smart horse in Eclair Fantastic but he won’t be meeting him at his next start and the punters will get value about him over the Flemington carnival.
C’Est la Guerre – In the Yalumba Stakes, this bloke produced his best effort since joining the Lloyd Williams camp after his NZ Derby success. After settling back in a moderately-run race, the son of Shinko King got the line well enough to suggest that he is coming along beautifully for his next assignment which will probably be in the Moonee Valley Cup on Cox Plate day. The Lloyd Williams operation have dominated the MV Cup in recent years, winning it with Zipping and Gallic in the last two runnings of the event.
Pillar of Hercules – He drew wide in the GI Toorak Handicap and did all of the donkey work out three wide without cover throughout the race with the eventual winner, Alamosa, using him for cover before peeling off his back at the 600 metres. The Peter Moody-trained stallion was entitled to drop out and run down the track in the Toorak Handicap but stuck on in a gutsy fashion to tough it out for third. All four of his runs since a spell have been very good and he’s ready to win if he gets the right draw in the Emirates Stakes.
