Melbourne Cup Day Tips
One of the world's most challenging horse races
The Melbourne Cup is one of the world's most challenging horse races and is the richest race in Australia, and it is the highlight of the Spring Racing Carnival. The race is run over 3,200 metres and is a handicapped race, this means the better horse carries the most weight . The distance and the handicap ensure that the Melbourne Cup is a horse race in which the occasional punter really has no chance of picking the winner.

Cruisy Lady – Greg Bennett-trained five-year-old mare and had to contend with a poor gate when coming to town third-up over 1300m. Tye Angland had no luck in the early stages and was posted midfield out three and four wide. Began to urge Cruisy Lady forward from the 700m and really got stuck into her rounding the turn. She responded and knuckled down after them inside the final 250m. Rounded them up and kept going for a very strong win. Only had 14 starts and the best is still ahead of her.

Rio Osa – Eye-catching runner-up behind Mary’s Grace in the Ratings 86 (1200m) event. Settled back in the field one off the fence and with a moderate tempo up front it was going to be tough for the backmarkers. Outpaced on straightening it appeared a sound fourth of fifth was in store but Josh Parr weaved a path clear between the 250-100m and once spotted daylight really attacked the line to grab second place. Would have won in a few more bounds and will be spot on third-up. Sectionals were good (see below). Handy mare.
Fighting Fund – Resumed over 1100m but from a wide gate drifted back last on the rails. Kathy O’Hara had little option but to ride for luck and persevered with inside runs from the turn. Was slightly held-up on occasion but continued to build momentum and really flew inside the final 125m. Finished right on the placegetters heels and will be hard to beat second-up over slightly further.

Geyser Peak – This son of Anabaa was second-up going in last Wednesday’s event and did plenty of work early to find a position from his outside draw before settling outside the leader facing the breeze. Geyser Peak fought on very strongly to the line but was no match for the fitter stablemate , Vigor, who had a perfect run sitting behind the leaders while Geyser Peak did all the work up front. He’s won three races from six starts so he obviously has a stack of ability and can pinch a race over the Flemington carnival.

Allez Wonder / Think Money – Bart Cummings trains both of these fillies and while turning in contrasting runs over 2000 metres at Caufield showed that they both relish extra distance. Allez Wonder was caught three-wide facing the breeze for the entire trip and stuck on very well over the concluding stages to narrowly miss third place after a torrid run. Think Money was back near the rear in a very slowly-run affair, exhibited a decent turn of foot to get home strongly off such a slow pace. These two turned in super Oaks trials and, while they are no hope of beating Samantha Miss in the VRC Oaks, they may well represent excellent each-way value and add some value to any exotic dividend in the Oaks. Remember , Bart sent Marjorie around last year and nabbed third at 100-1 so there is a precedent.
Aichi – This Darley-owned three-year-old bumped into a red-hot Sunburnt Land in the GII Thai International Airways Sprint where he was given no hope at the weights. The three-year-old was forced to carry 2kg over weight-for-age and produced a super performance to go under by a half-length. Back to his own age and the set weight conditions, he could be the one to upset Northern Meteor and Fist of Fury in the Coolmore Stakes . The two Sydney boom horses have never raced down the straight but Aichi has already won there, beating the smart Time Thief in the GII Danehill Stakes (1200m) in September.
